We cannot sit back and wait for others to act.
This is the time to get involved; now is the time to start working.
Last election cycle we had multiple Officers volunteer to take coffee and hot chocolate to the campaigns in Fairbanks, Anchorage, and the Valley. Those small gifts were received with tremendous appreciation and the Officers were able to stand and talk to the candidates about Correctional Officer issues. Imagine the impact it could have if there were enough volunteers to reach every campaign across the State.
Because of the success we saw when just a few Officers stood alongside candidates we are putting out this request to all Officers. Get to know who your candidates are for Senator and Representative and then volunteer on their campaign. We do not care which one you pick, just get involved.
We can say from experience that when a volunteer is working in a campaign office, in-between phone calls, folding mailers, and prepping door-hangers, they have tremendous access to the candidate.
So, find a candidate you would like to support. We do not care if it’s Democrat or Republican, House or Senate, just go volunteer for a campaign. A Correctional Officer sitting next to a candidate while folding mailers is far better than any trip ACOA could make to Juneau to meet with a Legislator. When a candidate knows that it was a Correctional Officer who stood up and fought for them, they are much more likely to stand up and fight for Correctional Officers. We cannot overstate the importance of this personal relationships and recognition.
