Health Insurance

General Info

There are a couple of State employee unions that have their own health trusts, but over 5,000 employees, including Correctional Officers belong to the State’s Health Plan, AlaskaCare. There are several levels of insurance you can participate in. The State pays the costs to belong in what is called the Default plan, which pays 70% of covered medical expenses after the deductibles are met and also provides the Preventative Dental Plan, which covers little more than routine exams and cleaning. The default plan currently costs the State $1088 a month and is part of your pay and benefits as a State employee. If you want to upgrade to a more expensive plan the difference between $1088 and the cost of the plan you select comes out of your pay each month. You also have options to select vision insurance, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, survivor benefits, and disability insurance. These selections all come out of your pay but for the most part are fairly reasonable. Click here for the State's "Health and Optional Benefits" website.
